Primark has donated more than £1.5 million to CHAS through bag levy donations since the launch of their partnership in 2015.

Over £102,811.03 has been donated this year alone.

The company chose to give all bag levy sale proceeds to CHAS after the Scottish Government introduced a law for large retailers to impose a 5p minimum charge on all single use bags.

CHAS Corporate Partnerships Manager, Angharad Low said:

“We really can’t thank Primark enough for their incredible generosity. £1.5m is an astounding, and truly transformational milestone in our partnership.

“Primark, its fantastic staff and customers, have stood with families across Scotland facing the death of their child, even through the challenges of the last 18 months. This most recent gift will be instrumental in supporting families as we emerge from the pandemic.”

Pauline McNamara, Store Manager of Primark Argyle Street said:

“We are so proud of our local charity partnerships, and we are delighted to support CHAS through our ongoing fundraising efforts. It is a charity that is close to our hearts and during what has been a difficult time, we are delighted to raise much needed funds to help support families in need. We admire the work of the staff at CHAS and look future to future milestones.”

By law and since 20 October 2014, all retailers in Scotland must charge a minimum of 10p for each new single-use carrier bag. In England, the government launched a 5p levy in 2015, raising almost £10m for charities in a year. It doubled this to 10p from 21 May this year, with all shops, including corner shops now having to comply.
